🧶The hat you reach for

BY SHELLEY BRANDER

Before I fill you in on this week’s filming adventures, I need to let you know that Louis Boria’s Knit Stars Single is on sale this week.

If you, like me, have a drawer full of handmade hats you never wear, or an even bigger Ravelry queue of hats you’ve admired but haven’t made, then Louis’ masterclass is the one you need right now.

I don’t often talk about it, but I’ve had more hat knitting disasters than any other kind. Firstly because, while I’m good about swatching for sweaters, I tend to avoid swatching for hats. And also because I’ve never really taken the time to understand my own noggin, and customize a hat that’s truly perfect for me.

Louis’ class addresses all that. He gives sizing charts, shows you how to convert stitch patterns from flat charts into the round, shares his favorite fool-proof techniques for things like stretchy brims, and shows you how to personalize your hat with patches, pompoms and create styling.

Grab Louis’ hat class while it’s on sale for $67, here.
Or get the full Season 6 (including Louis’ class) for just $197, here.Image item

Now for that update on the filming of Knit Stars Season 11: Your Season of Genius.

Last week was a real full-circle moment for me, as we entered the Beacon, New York home of author and maker Melanie Falick.

When I opened Loops a Yarn Store 20+ years ago, Melanie’s books were some of the first to fill my shelves. Kids KnittingWeekend Knitting and Knitting Across America

Chances are, if you’ve been knitting awhile, some of these titles are on your shelf, too! Image item

Right off the bat, a couple of things stand out in Melanie’s home…
First of all, there are books. Lots of books, everywhere.Image itemAnd secondly, but perhaps less obviously, there are countless winks and nods to Melanie’s personal passion for making everyday objects by hand.Image itemBaskets handwoven. Vegetables, homegrown and hand-picked. Dresses, hand-stitched. Everyday dishes, hand-formed and glazed, stacked quietly on a shelf..Image item
And a marriage memento full of meaning, hanging close by.Image itemMelanie’s Knit Stars masterclass will be titled The Maker’s Way: A Roadmap to Joy, and I’m betting it will encourage you to take a completely fresh look at the way you spend your time, use your hands and fill your home.

Melanie capped off her filming day with a cartwheel – a nod to her earliest days, as a gymnast (and also the circumstances in which she met her husband – but you’ll have to sign up for the Season to hear that whole story😉)

And we finished with a soft-serve wrap party. This may need to become a new Knit Stars tradition!
Just two masterclasses left to film for this Season, with Adella Colvin of LolaBean Yarn Co. and Chandi Agee of Expression Fiber Arts. Watch for more updates in upcoming issues of this newsletter. And thank you, as always, for reading!

xoxo,
