🧶Your most creative friend

BY SHELLEY BRANDER

franklin

We all have that one creative friend.

We see them, painting or drawing or sculpting or dressing so easily, so intuitively.

“You’re so creative!” we say. “I wish I could be like you.” 😔

And this, my friend, is where we get it wrong.

Because “we” are them.

Humans are creative beings. If you are breathing, you are creative, full stop.

(And by the way, the last time I checked, AI bots still can’t breathe.)

So then, why do some people seem to create so confidently and effortlessly, while others tend to put themselves down, sell themselves short, or never reach their full potential?

Great question!

I’ve been thinking on this a lot lately. It’s why I’ve decided to call our 2026 premiere “Knit Stars: Your Season of Genius.”

I want to take you on a journey alongside thousands of fellow creatives to uncover not only new techniques, but also the next-level creative confidence to take on any technique and make it your own.

With the help of our next brilliant Stars and the 8 pillars of creativity I’ve identified as the common threads linking our past 100+ Stars together, we will dive into not just the tricks to prettier projects, but the deeper limiting beliefs that keep us stuck and how to free them.

One example is the pillar of Place.

For Franklin Habit, something clicked into place, literally, when he moved to Paris. On the other hand, something clicked for Hélène Magnússon when she moved from France to Iceland.

And for me, I was drawn to the ocean my whole life. But not until my 50s did someone suggest actually moving to the place where my artist’s heart truly sings. When I finally took the leap and relocated, it unlocked whole new wells of creativity from deep inside me.

So in Your Season of Genius, we’ll explore Place and what it means for you. It might not mean something as drastic as a trans-Atlantic move. It might be simply re-considering your crafting space, or working in more visits to a nearby place that lights you up.

Together, we’ll explore 8 different pillars with our new Stars, to give you the creative tools and confidence to tackle their special techniques and any others that you’ve held back from exploring.

It won’t be about just filling your brain. It will be about filling your cup.

SuperEarlybird signups for Your Season of Genius close at midnight Pacific tonight. Click here to enroll for just $247 for 2026.

(While there, you’ll also have the option to subscribe and lock in this SuperEarlybird price for the next 3 years.)

“Sailor Slippers” by Annie Germain on Ravelry

These adorable “Sailor Slippers” by Annie Germain have been sitting on top of the Ravelry Hot Right Now list for a few weeks now. Could felting be making a comeback? I hope so!

Either way, these cuties would make a wonderful gift.

“Fiona” by Vicky Chan on Ravelry

So y’all know I’m more of a dog person (mainly because I’m allergic to cats), but what cat lover could resist this charming, slightly cropped “Fiona” sweater by Vicky Chan? It uses the ladder-back jacquard technique and can be found here on Ravelry.

Did you know there are nearly 200 patterns in the Knit Stars pattern store on Ravelry? Most all of them are tried-and-true yarn shop patterns that work really well with stash yarns, as they were designed to look great in whatever we had on our shelves.

One of my favorites is “Starry Starry Scarf,” because it employs a really-fun-to-work, and easy-to-remember star stitch.

Bonus: It has both a knit and a crochet version! You can find it on Ravelry here.

Best Sheet-Pan Thanksgiving Dinner
By Delish.com

Ok before any Americans reading this cry “blasphemy!” hear me out…

There are times you want the flavors of Thanksgiving, without the days of work. And there are times you might not be able to gather with a big extended family, but you want stuffing, dangit! This recipe is for these times. I made it this past weekend and it was so fabulous. The biggest aha was using garam masala to season the sweet potatoes! So save this one if you ever find yourself in this situation…or even if you just want stuffing in the middle of the summer.

Ingredients:
Stuffing

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 Tbsp. reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped (about 1 c.)
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped (about 1 c.)
  • 1 (12-oz.) bag herb-seasoned stuffing cubes
  • 1/3 cup dried cranberries

Turkey

  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tsp. dried poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. smoked paprika
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 (3- to 3 1/2-lb.) split turkey breast

Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 1/2 lb. sweet potatoes, peeled or unpeeled, cut into 1″ cubes
  • 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp. garam masala or pumpkin pie spice
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Green Beans & Assembly

  • 12 oz. green beans, trimmed
  • 1 cup sliced crimini mushrooms
  • 3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp. finely grated Parmesan
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp. fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • Zest of 1 orange, plus 2 Tbsp. fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup store-bought crispy fried onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans

Instructions:
Stuffing

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. In a large measuring cup, whisk egg, broth, parsley, and soy sauce; generously season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large pot over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add onion and celery; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until veggies are crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Remove pot from heat. Add stuffing cubes, cranberries, and broth mixture and gently stir until broth is soaked up.

Turkey

  1. In a small bowl, combine butter, poultry seasoning, garlic powder, and paprika; season with salt and pepper.
  2. Pat turkey dry. Using your fingers, gently loosen skin. Spread half of seasoned butter under skin, then spread remaining seasoned butter on top of skin.
  3. Give stuffing a stir, then spread on one half of a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place turkey breast on top of stuffing.

Sweet Potatoes

  1. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, oil, and garam masala; season with salt and pepper. Arrange potatoes on one quarter of baking sheet.
  2. Roast turkey, stuffing, and sweet potatoes for 40 minutes.

Green Beans

  1. In a medium bowl, toss green beans, mushrooms, and 2 Tbsp. oil; season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine Parmesan, butter, thyme, and garlic powder; season with salt and pepper. Arrange green beans on remaining quarter of baking sheet. Top beans with Parmesan mixture.
  3. Continue to roast until beans are tender and an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of turkey registers 155°, 25 to 35 minutes. Tent turkey with foil and let rest 10 minutes before carving.
  4. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine orange zest, juice, and remaining 1 Tbsp. oil; season with salt and pepper.
  5. Toss green beans to coat with Parmesan mixture; top with fried onions.
  6. Toss potatoes with orange zest mixture; top with pecans.
